Accessibility Services Available in the Cloud

To make it easier for organizations to create accessible applications and content, IBM has released two new cloud-based accessibility services on IBM Bluemix, Digital Content Checker and Automated Accessibility Tester. The services provide greater availability of accessibility so organizations can speed development efforts, create more personalized experiences through any contact point, and help conform to industry standards and government regulations.

Figure of a person (white) on a blue shield.Accessibility has become a critical focus for organizations worldwide in order to improve the user experience on any device, optimize communications, satisfy compliance requirements, and create an inclusive workplace environment. This is driven by the more than 1 billion people with disabilities (including the rapidly growing aging population); new and evolving government regulations; the proliferation of mobile devices; and, new industry standards, such as EPUB, an open standard format for digital publications.

These trends are causing organizations to find better ways to integrate accessibility across the entire enterprise – from design, development and testing of applications, to any content that is published on websites or through marketing campaigns.

The two new accessibility services on IBM Bluemix give designers and developers an easy and fast way to incorporate and strengthen accessibility, while helping reduce costs by ensuring it is done right from the beginning:

Allows anyone, especially those in a marketing organization, to easily upload and verify the accessibility of HTML content or EPUB documents so all clients, employees and constituents encounter no issues when accessing the information in web and mobile applications. The service quickly examines the content, provides a detailed report of all accessibility violations, and then recommends how to fix the issues so the content conforms to standards and regulations before being published. It can also be customized for an organization’s internal content development workflow so accessibility is part of the review and approval process. View a demo.

Incorporates automated accessibility reporting and auditing capabilities directly within the Selenium testing framework. This service improves the quality of the testing environment by adding accessibility checkpoints that run during agile development so any violations can be corrected in DevOps before deployment. These services are the latest innovation in IBM’s arsenal of accessibility solutions. IBM now delivers on premise and cloud options to help organizations better manage, have more insights and be more proactive in creating accessible applications and content. IBM has developed best practices in education, design, web and mobile development, and tooling to help eliminate accessibility roadblocks and drive greater inclusivity for people of all abilities on any device.
